Underhill ID Physical Education

The mission of Underhill ID School Physical Education is to educate minds, develop fitness and sports skills, and inspire positive attitudes towards living a healthy lifestyle.  The physical education program will empower students with the knowledge and skills that will create a foundation for a lifetime of physical activity.
Underhill ID believes that physical education is an essential part of the comprehensive educational program.  Elementary physical education promotes the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development of students.  When students become more physically active, their opportunity for learning increases.  Physical activity is an integral factor for learning in all content areas.
The physical education program provides a comprehensive, developmental K-4 curriculum that allows for differentiation to meet the needs of all learners.  Through both individual and group activities, students develop the skills and knowledge necessary for a lifetime of physical activity.  The curriculum engages students and helps them to develop positive attitudes towards exercise and wellness.
The goals for elementary students in PE focus on refinement and application of movement skills, game concepts, teamwork, problem solving, and fitness.  These areas are all addressed in the National and State standards.  The curriculum teaches to the whole learner, supporting the development of physical, cognitive, and social-emotional skills.

Welcome Back!

Wow!  What a fantastic start to the school year.  Students have been very active in PE class.  We are learning and reviewing space concepts (self space, general space, levels, directions, and pathways).  Students in Kindergarten are exploring with some of the fun equipment we will use this year in PE.  We are also participating in a variety of cooperative and tag games, working to build our "team" in PE.  We will begin our soccer unit next week!
All students have PE class on Mondays and Fridays.  Please help your child be prepared by wearing comfortable clothing for moving, SNEAKERS, and a water bottle (if desired).  Please contact me at Amanda.Cowan@cesuvt.org if you have any questions!

Gymnastics in PE

Students are currently participating in Gymnastics in PE class.  All grades are learning Balances, Rolls, and Jumps.  Students are working on these skills in individual, partner, and small group settings.  As a culminating project students in Kindergarten and grades 1,2 will use the skills to create small floor and balance beam routines.  Students in grades 3,4 will work in groups to create a floor routine, which they will watch on the ipad and then complete a self-assessment of their routine.
Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move around in during the gymnastics unit!  Please email me at Amanda.Cowan@cesuvt.org if you have any questions.

Jump Rope for Heart Final Results

We had a fantastic day on March 7th participating in Jump Rope for Heart.  Students completed a variety of jumping stations, including Chinese Jump Rope, Group Jumping, and even an all school challenge.  All students were asked to count how many times they jumped in 5 minutes.  Our UID School total number of jumps was 16,471!!  That is over 3,000 jumps more than we got last year.  Our fundraising efforts are complete and UID raised a total of $445.00 for the American Heart Association.  Way to go UID!!

Jump Rope For Heart

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

Today students at UID participated in Jump Rope for Heart during PE classes!  We did Chinese jump rope, long rope jumping, and played Helicopter and Snake.  Students also tried the Skip-It ropes.  Students also jumped for five minutes and recorded their jumping scores.  As a school we completed over 12,000 jumps!!
Thank you to all families who have made donations to the American Heart Association.  If you are still planning on making a donation, please send it in to school by Monday (3/10)!  Students will receive a fun duck key chain with any donation amount.  Thank you for helping the American Heart Association!

Tae Kwon Do In PE

TAE KWON DO IN PE CLASS

We are honored and excited to have Master Lenny Yordan joining us next week at UID for a mini residency!  He will be teaching Tae Kwon Do to all PE classes.  Master Yordan is the owner of Yordan’s Black Belt Academy (Y.B.B.A.).  Many of our students (and their families) currently do Tae Kwon Do with him here at Underhill ID School.  Through Tae Kwon Do Master Yordan focuses on fitness, positive life styles, promoting a positive self image, and being a valuable member to your community.  We look forward to a fantastic week!
**Master Yordan has said that any current students who would like to bring their uniforms to wear during PE class are welcome to do so!

Look Who's Getting Exercise!

Students are always excited to share ways that they are getting exercise outside of PE.  We thought it would be a fun idea to have students bring in pictures of themselves participating in some of these activities to create a Look Who’s Getting Exercise Bulletin Board in the multi-purpose room.  If your family chooses, you can send in a picture to Mrs. Cowan (PE).  Pictures will be returned at the end of the school year (but may have a staple mark in themJ).  This will be an ongoing bulletin board and pictures may be brought in any time between now and June.  Please contact Mrs. Cowan at Amanda.Cowan@cesuvt.org if you have any questions.  Let’s get moving!!
